Panorama overview from the Manhattan Beach Pier of the Charley Saikley 6-Man Volleyball event during the 2005 annual South Bay Surf Festival. A one-of-a-kind event of serious volleyball mixed with costumed levity, booming music and participant partying.
'Surf Festival 2005'
Thousands of people and players gather and participate in this annual local South Bay sporting event. With teams dressed in fun costumes some serious volleyball is also played for the 6-Man Championship bragging rights. I have photographed this event since the 1980s' including at times from a helicopter and for this panorama image I went down in 2005 which happened to be one of the biggest crowd/participant turn outs ever. I watched for a while then as 'Team Fletch' (yellow shirts) started their game I set up my 8ft ladder (to be above the obstacles in front), composed the scene, loaded my Fuji617 Panorama camera (4 shots on 120 roll) and shot this image when the play was made.
