For more than 50 years, John Post has photographed the changing beauty of Manhattan Beach, its iconic pier, and the surrounding South Bay coastline. His collection captures spectacular sunsets, powerful surf, local events, wildlife, and everyday moments that have become part of the community's history.
"A famous artist once said he never needs more than an acre of land in a lifetime to never run out of good subject matter and good art. I chose a small area of Manhattan Beach around the pier as my acre of land. I first photographed the pier in 1969. The pier has been the backbone of the community and the story of my photography." - John Post
While Manhattan Beach remains the heart of John's work, his photography reaches far beyond the South Bay. A lifetime of travel has taken him across six continents, photographing people, cultures, landscapes, and the relationship between humanity and its environment. From remote villages in India and the streets of Afghanistan to the Australian Outback and the cities of Europe, his images reflect a lifelong fascination with how people live, work, celebrate, and adapt to the places they call home.
Today the John Post Gallery contains more than 1,300 photographs spanning over five decades of artistic and documentary photography.
